Right now we live in Utah and I want to study to become a nurse. We’re planing on moving to Montreal sometime in the future, and I dont know any French. I just want to know if I will be able to work without having to know French. Of course I’ll take a class, but I probably wont be speaking fluently any time soon.

My husband and I want to move to Montreal, QC. Do I have to learn French in order to work in a hospital? by Jim B, February 6, 2010
Lets reverse the question, shall we ?
How well could you do your nursing in Utah, if you could NOT speak English ??
Quebec is a French speaking Province, and therefore, a nurse would HAVE TO BE ABLE to communicate, and read and write, in French. Not just at a basic level, but at a University level, in a professional medical environment.
I would strongly suggest that you re-think your plan. Try another part of Canada, where English is the working language. not Quebec. Why make things harder for your self ?

If you want to be a nurse in Quebec you will need to read, write and speak fluent French. The licensing exam is completely in French and is apparently very difficult.

Montreal is over half Francophone. In order to work as a nurse in a hospital you will need to be very fluent in French. Sorry.

It isn’t a required skill, but it is certainly a useful one as people from rural Quebec come in to Montreal hospitals. If you can start learning it now, you can work on fluency once you get to Quebec.
Bonne chance, et Joyeux Noel.

Although it is not required for you to have to know french, it would still be a good idea for you to know some basic french.

This is the web site for the Quebec Order of Nursing.
http://www.oiiq.org/
Once you finally find the link to the English version, this is the first line; "The Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ) Web site was designed in French, as all nurses practising in Quebec, like all members of any other professional order, must have good command of the French language".
I think that answers your question.
My husband and I want to move to Montreal, QC. Do I have to learn French in order to work in a hospital? by Christmas is coming!!, February 6, 2010
Yes, you’ll need French here for sure. Bilingualism is a real asset for English speakers. Not only in hospitals, but for nearly every job here. I work at an English university here, and my job is about 99% English, but I still had to pass half my interview in French, and do some of the tests in French before being hired.

basically anyone dealing with the public needs to be bilingual.

There are two major hospitals in Montreal that cater to the English speaking community. If you get a job offer from one of them, and you then get Canadian and Quebec work permits, I believe you get a government variance from being required to speak French, but only for 2 years. You are expected to become fluent in French during the period, after which you are given a French exam. If you do not pass you are a retired nurse until you do.
You might wish to examine any openings at Fletcher hospital in Burlington, VT, and the Plattsburgh, NY, hospital, and commute. Many Montrealers do.
Of course since you only "plan" to move to Montreal (Wow!! What a cultural change!!!)
in the future you might put your nose to the grindstone and learn French beginning now.
